Charities we have supported

The club generally likes to support local charities i.e. charities that provide services where the local area will perhaps realise the benefit a bit more. The rationale for this is that national charities usually have more resources with which to fund campaigns, which sometimes means that smaller charities don't get a look-in as it were.

2008-09

In the 2008 - 09 year, we are supporting Leonard Cheshire - which is a National charity which serves people with various disabilities and who hope to change some of the attitudes that people with physical and mental disabilities face. The charity has dedicate homes, which are dotted around the South. We support them by selling raffle tickets on their behalf and collecting outside shops. We also hope to offer more practical help by assisting with the garden in one of the local homes. Although this is a National charity, it has local ties having been founded in North-East Hampshire.

2007-08

Countess Mountbatten Hospice

In the 2007 - 08 year, Southampton Rotaract raised money for Countess Mountbatten House (CMH), this is a palliative care service. It provides a specialist palliative care service for patients with advancing cancer, and for their families, providing all levels of needed care. The hospice is a 25 bed unit set in attractive gardens on the east of Southampton. Aside from palliative in-patient care, the unit also provides day care and community services. The total raised was £900

2006-07

In the 2006 - 07 year, Southampton Rotaract elected to raise money for the Oakhaven Hospice - who provide care and support to terminally ill patients and respite for their families. Examples of the fundraising this year by Rotaract members include a stall at the Rotary Gardner's Fayre, various quizzes throughout the year, volunteering work and a Burns night celebration, regular activities included filling smartie-tubes with 20p pieces and a raffle for a box of chocolates at every meeting. Part of the subscriptions also funded the donations. The total raised was £1,000
